Blueprints to Freedom: An Ode to Bayard Rustin is a world premiere presented in partnership with La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego. Bayard Rustin was one of the leading civil rights activists of his era, and was the principal architect of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. His story is one that has been largely forgotten in the pages of history, due in large part to the fact that he was an openly gay man working within the Civil Rights movement. KC Rep’s production highlights Bayard’s life during the planning stages of the March on Washington, his interactions with civil rights pioneers Martin Luther King, Jr. and A. Philip Randolph.
